Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has hinted that Cole Palmer could step up as a striker, given injuries to Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu, as he seeks to ensure Chelsea’s front line remains potent for the rest of the season.
Enzo Maresca has indicated that Chelsea may have to make tactical adjustments in attack following muscle injuries to his primary forwards. With 19-year-old Marc Guiu sidelined for “weeks or months” after an adductor injury and 23-year-old Nicolas Jackson doubtful due to a hamstring problem, Maresca joked about potentially playing up front himself, though he pointed out that he has previously utilised Cole Palmer in a No9 role. The manager is confident that Palmer—who has been prolific this season with 14 Premier League goals in 24 appearances—can be deployed in a more advanced position if required. Additionally, Maresca believes that Christopher Nkunku, who has already featured in an attacking midfield role, is ready to assume responsibilities similar to Palmer’s, thus reinforcing the depth in Chelsea’s offensive setup.
Maresca also touched on the broader transfer strategy, noting that while the club left England forward Felix out for load management and did not recruit a new striker or left winger in the window, his plans remain on track. With Felix now on loan to AC Milan and the market still open for additional signings in the summer, Maresca’s comments underline a pragmatic approach to using the resources at his disposal to maintain balance and competitiveness despite short-term injuries.
