Chelsea legend John Terry believes the club’s struggles in the second half of the season are due to their young squad lacking experience, leading to inconsistency in performances under Enzo Maresca.
After a strong start to the season, Chelsea’s form has dipped, with the club now fighting for a top-four finish rather than competing for the title. John Terry has pointed to the squad’s youth and lack of seasoned leaders as the main reasons for their inconsistency, noting that their Premier League starting XI has the lowest average age (23.5) in the league.
Terry insists that Champions League football should be the minimum expectation every season and that the club needs to find greater stability. Following a humbling 3-0 defeat to Brighton—described by Maresca as Chelsea’s worst performance of the season—senior players held a behind-the-scenes meeting at Cobham to address concerns. Chelsea have since responded with a strong 4-0 win over Southampton, but they remain fifth in the table with 11 games left to secure Champions League qualification.
