Despite joining the club in January 2023 for around £18m, Santos has yet to feature for Chelsea, having spent loan spells at Vasco da Gama, Nottingham Forest, and, more recently, at sister club Strasbourg. At Strasbourg, the 20-year-old has flourished—scoring eight goals and providing two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions—which has impressed Chelsea’s hierarchy. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are delighted with his progress and intend to recall him at the end of the season. Santos, who sees himself best suited to a defensive midfield role in a 3-2-5 formation, has expressed his comfort and readiness to dictate the game’s tempo when playing alongside the full-back in that position. This strategic move is part of Chelsea’s broader plan to resolve their midfield instability and will likely provide Maresca with the stability needed to compete at the highest level next season.
