Chelsea have made 35 errors leading to a shot and 12 leading to a goal this season, ranking second-worst in both categories behind only bottom-placed Southampton.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles continued in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, with goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen’s late blunder marking yet another costly mistake. This was Chelsea’s 12th defensive error leading directly to a goal this season, a tally surpassed only by Southampton. The Blues have also made 35 mistakes that resulted in an opposition shot, highlighting their defensive frailties under Enzo Maresca.
Despite these issues, Chelsea remain within reach of a Champions League spot, with fifth place potentially securing qualification. However, unless their defensive lapses—particularly from goalkeepers Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez—are addressed, their hopes of returning to Europe’s elite competition could be in serious jeopardy.
Maresca’s men must quickly regain confidence, starting with Tuesday’s clash against Southampton, or risk another season without Champions League football.
